(WLNS) — The holidays are approaching and USPS is reminding folks to be wary of scams and fraud.

One scam, for example, is called “brushing,” where someone sends low-value items to random addresses without consent. These packages will usually contain a QR code, and if scanned, contain tracking data companies can use to post reviews and inflate store rankings.

This tracking data can expose residents to more scam calls and phishing, a way for scammers to get victims to reveal personal information.

Another issue for the postal service is the safety of postal carriers during the holiday season. Mark Inglett, strategic communications specialist at USPS, said that since launching Project Safe Delivery in 2023, the group has seen 27% fewer robberies and has made 2,800 arrests for mail theft.
