CLEVELAND, Ohio -- As nights turn crisp in Northeast Ohio and the frost warnings appear, it is time bring in outdoor herbs to keep enjoying the flavors and fragrances of summer.

While tender herbs like basil and cilantro can be difficult to transplant, tougher perennials like rosemary, thyme, and oregano can continue to grow indoors with a little preparation.

Even if you didn’t grow herbs outdoors this year, you may be able to find potted plants in local garden centers and grocery stores in the fall and grow them inside.

Choose compact, healthy plants with vibrant leaves and no signs of insects or mildew. Always turn the plant over when you are deciding whether to buy it; pass on any with long roots trailing from the bottom, because they are rootbound and will not transplant well.
