KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) - The University of Tennessee’s beloved retired mascot, Smokey X, has been diagnosed with cancer, according to a release from the university’s Institute of Agriculture.

The university says during his recent biannual appointment, a small mass was discovered on Smokey X’s kidney. Diagnostic testing later determined the mass was renal carcinoma, which is kidney cancer.

The oncology service at the veterinary college examined Smokey X to determine the best palliative care plan that will provide pain relief and comfort. The university says it is difficult to predict how much time he has, but the goal is to help him enjoy each day with the best quality of life.
