Cleanup is underway after Hurricane Melissa battered Jamaica, causing extensive damage and leaving residents and their families searching for updates amid widespread outages.

Officials are assessing the devastation as large portions of the island remain without power or internet.

Residents in Jamaica’s southwestern region awoke to destruction after Melissa made landfall as a Category 5 hurricane, packing sustained winds of 185 mph, one of the strongest storms ever recorded in the Atlantic.

Downed trees, collapsed roofs, crushed concrete barriers and blocked roadways brought parts of the region to a standstill.
