BLACKSBURG, Va. (WDBJ) - The need for affordable housing is not one that’s unique to the New River Valley, but it’s one regional partners are constantly working to combat through projects and community collaboration.
A 2021 regional and local housing study by the New River Valley Regional Commission (NRVRC) found there was a shortfall of 5,500 affordable homes in the NRV, and 9,000 local households paying more than 30% of their income toward housing.
“Housing prices have been growing faster than folks’ wages, and so it’s been a lot harder for folks to be able to buy that first home with interest rates spiking recently,” said Jennifer Wilsie, Director of Housing for NRVRC.
It’s a harsh reality, but Wislie said the best way to combat it is addressing the issue.
