DODGEVILLE, Wis. (WMTV) -HeadStart childhood development programs across southwestern Wisconsin are closing because of the ongoing government shutdown.
The delay in federal grant money, is leaving families below federal poverty guidelines without childcare and educational services.
Nine preschool classrooms in Grant, Iowa, Lafayette and Richland counties are shutting down after programs failed to receive a $3M federal grant that was scheduled to arrive Nov. 1.
“This just is not the way it’s supposed to be. These toys are meant to be played with,” said HeadStart teacher Rebecca Logue, standing in an empty classroom that would normally be filled with preschoolers.
