BUFFALO, N.Y. — As daylight saving time comes to an end this weekend, the American Red Cross is reminding everyone to do more than just turn back the clock — it’s also the perfect time to test your smoke alarms.
Officials say working smoke alarms can cut the risk of dying in a home fire in half, and that you may have only about two minutes to escape safely once a fire starts.
The Red Cross is urging families to check their smoke alarms, replace any that are more than 10 years old, and practice a home fire escape plan. The reminder comes as the Red Cross continues its national effort to reduce home fire deaths and injuries through its Sound the Alarm campaign, which helps families prepare for emergencies and stay safe year-round.
