KANSAS CITY, Mo - With daylight saving time ending on Sunday the American Red Cross is encouraging residents to test their smoke alarms as they turn their clocks back this weekend.
Over the past nine months Kansas City area Red Cross volunteers have helped 1,685 people affected by 441 home fires. Fires account for the majority of the approximately 65,000 disasters the Red Cross responds to across the county each year.
While testing smoke alarms and replacing batteries this weekend, the Red Cross also recommends developing an escape plan in case of a fire. Citizens are also recommended to replace smoke alarms that are ten years or older due to sensors becoming less sensitive over time. For more information visit redcross.org/homefires
