Concerns about the impact of the four-day week on services at South Cambridgeshire District Council have been raised by the government. Steve Reed, the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government, has written to Councillor Bridget Smith (Liberal Democrat), leader of the district council, raising his concerns about the impact on council services.

The four-day work week for council staff was made permanent earlier this year , following a trial, which was introduced in 2023. Under the four-day week staff receive full pay for working fewer hours, but are expected to complete all of their work in that time.
