Donald Trump announced in a post on Truth Social Thursday that the U.S. would immediately resume testing nuclear weapons after a thirty-year halt. The U.S. has not detonated a thermonuclear weapon since 1992.
"Because of other countries' testing programs, I have instructed the Department of War to start testing our nuclear weapons on an equal basis," Trump said in a post on Truth Social. "That process will begin immediately."
Russia and China have also not tested a nuclear weapon since the early 90's. Trump may be referring to Russia's recent tests of an underwater nuclear-powered drone and a nuclear-powered cruise missile, neither of which was an explosion test of a thermonuclear weapon, which Trump is referring to when ordering the U.S. to resume testing nuclear weapons.
