SHAFTSBURY — For the tightly-knit 20-member congregation of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Shaftsbury, quilting has become a powerful act of healing and outreach.

What began about 15 years ago as a personal family project for one of its long-time members, has grown into a major annual effort for Project Linus, a non-profit that provides quilts to comfort children facing physical and emotional hardship.

This past Sunday, 277 quilts - all made by the volunteer group led by the church’s longtime treasurer, Annette Dixon of Pownal, the volunteer Bennington County coordinator for Project Linus – were draped throughout every part of the church sanctuary as Redeemer held its annual blessing of the quilts - which also coincided with Reformation Sunday, one of the most sacred dates in the Lutheran c
