Montreal’s own Rufus Wainwright performed the Canadian national anthem before Game 5 of the World Series in Los Angeles, but not without a few lyrical changes.
During his bilingual rendition of O Canada, Wainwright changed “in all of us command” to “that only us command,” in a likely response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s 51st state rhetoric. Chantal Kreviazuk was the first to make the switch when she sang the anthem at the 4 Nations Face-Off final earlier this year.

In French, his lyrical changes appeared to be less intentional. Immediately after the “command” line, Wainwright omitted the “sait” in “ car ton bras sait porter l’épée.” He also changed “brillants exploits” to “glorieux exploits.”
