Morgan Freeman’s introduction to the blues came early. Article content Article content
He was four or five and living in Charleston, MS. It was the early 1940s and the Oscar-winning actor grew up with music. His mother was a musician who played piano, although Freeman doesn’t remember her ever playing the blues. He does, however, remember men with guitars and mason jars filled with moonshine.
“I didn’t’ call it the blues,” says Freeman, in a Zoom interview with Postmedia. “I didn’t know just what they were doing. But it goes that far back for me. I don’t claim to be any kind of aficionado. I like music, it doesn’t really matter what genre you’re using. Just play it well and I’m a fan.”
Nevertheless, Freeman has owned The Ground Zero Blues Club in Clarksdale, MS for more than 20 years.
