STARKE, Fla. (WCJB) - A Bradford County Sheriff’s deputy was arrested and fired on Wednesday for stealing from a jail inmate’s account.

The Bradford County Sheriff’s Office received a tip about the theft totaling $550. Officials say a computer audit confirmed Deputy Francis Highland intentionally took the money from a jail banking account.

Highland confessed to the crime and was arrested.

“To say I am disappointed is an understatement,” Bradford County Sheriff Gordon Smith said in a statement. “The Bradford County Sheriff’s Office strives to be professional and beyond reproach. This individual has not only violated his oath to God and country, he has dishonored himself. I immediately fired him and will seek to revoke his law enforcement and correctional certifications.”
