BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ( WBRC ) - The name of a woman who died after an officer-involved shooting in Birmingham has been released.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office has identified the woman as Vanessa Ragland of Birmingham. She was 36.

According to Birmingham Police Chief Michael Pickett, just after 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 29, East Precinct officers responded to a call in the 600 block of Brunson Avenue in the Zion City community.

Police say the call said an altercation was happening at one of the homes and involved a person who was violent and “possibly involved weapons.”

Pickett says when officers arrived, shots were fired and Ragland was hit. No officers were injured.

She was taken to UAB St. Vincent’s East Hospital where she passed away a short time later.
