PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Día de los Muertos, known as the Day of the Dead in English, is a celebration that honors family members and other loved ones who have passed away. Large celebrations are being held across the Valley, including one historic church in downtown Phoenix.

St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Basilica, the oldest Catholic parish church in the metro Phoenix area, is hosting its 12th annual Día de los Muertos festival this weekend.

During Día de los Muertos, family members set up ofrendas filled with bright marigold flowers, photos of loved ones and pets, and their favorite foods and drinks as offerings. The offerings are believed to encourage visits from those who have departed, joining the living for the grand celebration.
