LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) - A coalition of 25 states is suing the Trump administration to reverse the suspension of SNAP benefits as the government shutdown continues.
Nebraska is not among the states filing the lawsuit, but 150,000 residents who use the benefits each month are affected by the suspension. Of those, 70,000 are children. Community members are picking up the slack as the duration of the pause remains unknown.
According to data from the USDA, around 42 million people across the country use SNAP benefits to put food on the table each month. In what may be the biggest consequence of the government shutdown, those benefits will stay paused for as long as the government does.
The tall and vital task of helping feed those in need of assistance now falls completely on the community. L
