Detroit City Clerk Janice Winfrey implored residents on Thursday to vote in the city election next week, for which her department is anticipating a turnout under 25%.
"I want to emphasize that in the city of Detroit, you have no excuse not to cast your ballot," she told reporters. "There are no excuses or barriers to the process in the city of Detroit."
City Council President Mary Sheffield and the Rev. Solomon Kinloch Jr. are competing to succeed Mike Duggan as mayor of Michigan's largest municipality. Residents will also vote for the city clerk, the council, the Board of Police Commissioners and the Community Advisory Council in Tuesday's municipal general election.
