It’s tempting for the University of Regina Rams to peek over the next hill and see the Hardy Cup, which they won last year as Canada West champions.

Just past that is the Vanier Cup, the trophy given to the U Sports football champs, which the Rams would dearly love to win Nov. 22 in Regina. Host teams, unfortunately for the Rams, don’t get a bye into the Canadian university football championship.

Rams head coach Mark McConkey began this season telling his players to not get distracted with thoughts about playing in a hometown Vanier Cup. But those destinations are getting closer for the Rams, the reigning CanWest champs who first have to make sure they’re prepared for their conference semifinal Saturday, 5 p.m., at Mosaic Stadium against the University of Manitoba Bisons.
