STONINGTON, Conn. (WTNH) -- Police say a Stonington High School student was taken into custody after allegedly bringing a firearm to school Thursday morning.

Stonington police said they responded to a report of a student in possession of a firearm at the school, and the student was taken into custody after an initial investigation.

The school remains on lockdown as a precaution.

"Stonington Police Department quickly resolved the issue. We are in the process of following our safety protocols, which are deliberate and thoughtful. In addition, we are messaging the community every 30 minutes to update them on the status of the situation," Superintendent Mary Anne Butler said in a written statement.

State police responded to the incident to assist Stonington police.
