Addison police issued a shelter-in-place alert for some residents Thursday afternoon and urged people to avoid a block in the Chicago suburb amid a "serious situation" that also put nearby schools into "secure" status.

Authorities urged anyone in the area to avoid the 200 block of East La Porte Drive "due to ongoing Addison police activity."

"Officers are on scene, and more information will follow as it becomes available," the department wrote on social media.

An alert sent to residents' phones urged those in the immediate area to "shelter in place immediately."

Addison School District 4 said there was "an ongoing situation with a community member at his home involving local police" near Fullerton and Ardmore.

"It is a serious situation," the district wrote to families.
