DES MOINES, Iowa (KCRG) - Governor Kim Reynolds says Iowa food banks will see increased support from the state as SNAP benefits are not released during the federal government shutdown.
Reynolds is directing the department of Health and Human Services (HSS) to recruit and deploy volunteers for food assistance operations. HHS said staffing, distribution and food inventory are the main focus.
Reynolds told HHS to use state funds to match food bank donations up to $1 million starting November 3 if SNAP benefits are not funded during November. The six regional food banks included in the match serve all 99 counties.
Reynolds has also instructed the Iowa National Guard to be available for state active duty to assist with food operations as needed.
