DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — The former mayor of Stonecrest, a convicted felon, lied about his criminal record while registering to vote and attempting to qualify to run for city council, the DeKalb District Attorney's office announced on Thursday.
"It was pretty bold for a man convicted of a felony" to try to run for office, District Attorney Shari Boston said at a news conference on Thursday.
On Tuesday, a county grand jury indicted Jason Wallace Lary Sr., 63, on felony charges of making false statements, false registration, and two counts of false swearing.
Lary began a 57-month sentence in January 2023, following his guilty plea to federal fraud charges in December 2022. He pleaded guilty to charges implicating him in a COVID-19 relief scheme.
