ALBANY, Ore. - A 28-year-old Albany man died on Wednesday after being struck by a train at the Queen Avenue railroad crossing, according to the Albany Police Department.

APD officials said that Joseph VanZandt was hit by a southbound Amtrak passenger train on Oct. 29 as he attempted to cross the tracks. Witnesses reported that VanZandt and his dog went under lowered crossing arms and around a stopped freight train. The Amtrak train then hit him on a separate track. The dog was unharmed and released to a friend at the scene, police said.

The Albany Police Department urges the community to obey railroad crossing signals and never cross around lowered gates or stopped trains, emphasizing that trains can move on adjacent tracks without warning.

The department extends its condolences to VanZ
