Maryland Gov. Wes Moore on Thursday declared a state of emergency and announced $10 million in emergency funding to help food banks and community partners as a prolonged federal government shutdown threatens to cut off food aid for hundreds of thousands of residents.

Speaking at the Anne Arundel County Food Bank in Crownsville, Moore said the move is meant to protect Marylanders who depend on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, which provides food assistance to about 680,000 people in the state.
