Poot Lovato is finally getting their moment in the spotlight.
On the eve of Halloween, Demi Lovato resurrected the infamous mid-2010s meme by dressing up as their viral alter ego, the singer shared on Instagram.
"Happy Halloween and happy one week of ('It's Not That Deep')!!!" Lovato wrote, referencing the Oct. 24 release of their ninth album. "Been so locked in this era thought I'd let Pootvato out "
The post included a side-by-side photo of Lovato, 33, posing with a half-shaven hairstyle as someone held a cellphone showing the Poot meme. The joke was first sparked in 2015 when an edited red-carpet photo of Lovato circulated online.
A Tumblr user subsequently reposted the photo and identified the distorted image of Lovato as the singer's long-lost twin, Poot, who allegedly spent their entire life locked in a basement.
Lovato's Halloween post included a couple wacky videos of the "Kiss" songstress impersonating Poot, including a clip of Lovato lip-syncing to Sabrina Carpenter's "House Tour" as they ambled around what appeared to be a garage.
"Alright Halloween is over everyone. Pack it up," Lovato's husband, Jordan "Jutes" Lutes, wrote in the comments on the post. "It belongs to Demi this year. Better luck next year."
What Demi Lovato has said about Poot meme
Lovato has come around on embracing the legacy of Poot.
In a July 2023 interview with Harper's Bazaar, the Grammy-nominated singer reflected that it was "definitely weird" when the meme took off online, though they later conceded that "it's really funny to look back on."
"When Poot went viral, that actually sucked because I thought that was a real picture of me," Lovato told the outlet. "And I was like, 'Oh, no. That's a really bad angle.' But Poot was photoshopped. Later, I felt better about it because I realized that wasn't my face."
In April, Lovato poked fun at their internet "twin" in a TikTok video that featured the singer responding to the video caption, "When someone asks me to let Poot out of the basement..."
"Wow, what an offer," Lovato lip-synced in response, later writing in the post's caption: "And I'm never letting her out."
