States are taking different approaches to help families who are afraid that they won’t get SNAP benefits on Nov. 1.

Connecticut is one of several states giving additional aid to food pantries. Foodshare is purchasing six million additional meals over two weeks, thanks to $3 million in funding.

Others, like Vermont, Virginia and Louisiana are going a step further and creating state-run substitutes to SNAP.

That will allow those states to fund benefits SNAP-receiving households using cards those families already have through the program.

“We're looking into that,” Gov. Ned Lamont (D-Connecticut) said when asked about the possibility in Connecticut. “There's some expensive setup costs.”
