PORTLAND, Ore. — The federal government shutdown continues without an end in sight. On Nov. 1, tens of millions of people in the U.S. are at risk of losing federal food and nutrition benefits as a result . This includes nearly 42 million people who rely on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, previously known as food stamps.
In Oregon, 757,000 people rely on SNAP benefits, or 1 in 6 residents — including 210,000 children and 130,000 older adults statewide.
Many local businesses have stepped up to offer donations, fundraise and even give out free meals for those impacts by the loss of SNAP benefits.
Gov. Tina Kotek declared a food security emergency on Wednesday. The 60-day declaration directs $5 million of unspent federal funds to the state's food bank network.
