JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KY3) - In Missouri’s capital city sits something ominous, preternatural, and some may even say sinister: a nearly 200-year-old prison, the oldest on this side of the Mississippi River.

The Missouri State Penitentiary is nicknamed the bloodiest 47 acres in America. Now, 20 years after it stopped operating as a prison, it’s open for history and ghost tours. Ghost Tour Guide Reese Ramold calls it the “best job ever.”

“Aside from being an awesome part of the paranormal community, it’s that history that you can come in, and this is how the women were treated, this is how the African Americans were treated. We need to keep that history so it doesn’t happen again,” Ramold said.
