SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (WPRI) — The Roy Carpenter's Beach Association celebrated a "historic milestone" Wednesday.
The association announced in a social media post that it purchased the 50-acre beachfront property from Matunuck Beach Properties.
"It's official — we bought the beach!" the association wrote. "For the first time in our nearly 80-year history, the families of Roy Carpenter's Beach now own the land of their summer homes."
Roy Carpenter's Beach is a 1/4-mile long stretch of shoreline off Cards Pond Road in South Kingstown. The beach is primarily utilized by the owners of the 377 summer cottages that flank it.
The association noted it received 100% owner participation in its effort to purchase the property.
