SARASOTA, Fla. (WWSB) - Nearly two years after $211 million was awarded to the Kowalski family after suing Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital for negligence, the judgment has been overturned.

In 2023, a jury found the hospital was negligent when they reported the mother of then 10-year-old Maya Kowalski to a child abuse hotline.

Legal experts tell ABC7 a major reason the verdict was reversed is that the jury was shown evidence that wasn’t necessarily relevant to the case, along with the actions of the hospital during Maya’s time there.

“It comes down to, did the hospital act in bad faith,” Tampa attorney Bryant Camareno said.
