TUSCALOOSA, Ala. ( WBRC ) - Many communities are stepping up to help families who could soon lose their food benefits during the government shutdown.

Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits are scheduled to end at the end of October and organizations are already seeing needs increase.

It didn’t take long for the calls to start pouring in at the New Heights Community Resource Center. Folks there are moving with speed to relieve a burden.

University of Alabama student and intern Ryan Hendrzak loaded up bags of food for those in need. Each one weighs around 65 pounds, but that kind of load doesn’t compare to the uncertainty families are feeling now, wondering how they’ll have anything to eat.

That’s what Hendrzak thought about.
