A Bellevue police officer is putting more than two decades of paramedic experience to use through a new program.

Officer Barb Shapiro joined the Bellevue police force in late 2023. But recently the police and fire departments launched a tactical medic program.

The idea is to ensure a first responder has full paramedic qualifications as well as the tactical skills and equipment needed in dangerous situations, like SWAT calls. Shapiro fit the bill.

"Luckily, we have not had a situation come up," Shapiro said, "but I'm ready for it if it does."

But Shapiro has been able to respond to calls quicker than paramedics in some situations. The department recently commended Shapiro for her speedy response to a serious car crash that hurt an older woman.
