Just in time for Halloween, New York Botanical Garden (NYBG) officials said the infamous Amorphophallus titanum , commonly known as the “corpse flower,” is starting to bloom at the garden, unleashing what they say is its legendary stench but stunning beauty.

“It’s always hard to predict when this marvel of nature will flower and when it does, it only lasts for a brief time,” NYBG officials said. “So, it’s fitting that it is happening right before Halloween, that most macabre of holidays!”

Amid the spooky season, NYBG officials said the latest Amorphophallus titanum began blooming in its Haupt Conservatory around 2.30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 29.
