OXFORD, Miss. - The FBI indicted 14 law enforcement officers from the Mississippi Delta and charged them in connection with a years-long drug smuggling operation, according to Mississippi State Attorney Clay Joyner.
The officers allegedly involved worked for agencies across the region and included the sheriff of Humphreys County, Mississippi, and a patrolman with the Mississippi Highway Patrol. Joyner said the officers are accused of accepting bribes to aid drug trafficking across the region and even into Memphis.
The state's attorney said the FBI's operation into the drug trafficking dates back at least four years and began when drug dealers, upon arrest, complained of paying bribes to local authorities. At least two of those bribes were for $20,000 and $37,000, according to Joyner.
