MUSKEGON, MI – One century ago, a Muskegon police detective became a local hero when he took down a notorious gangster.
Charles DeWitt Hammond is well-known among the Muskegon County police community.
The late detective died on Oct. 31, 1925, after a gun battle with Chicago gangster George “Dutch” Anderson.
MLive/Muskegon Chronicle reviewed its archives surrounding the national manhunt and capture of Anderson to help honor Hammond’s heroism.
That Halloween, Anderson used a $20 counterfeit bill at the Colonial Café in downtown Muskegon. The cashier was suspicious and had the bank across the street determine whether the bill was fake – and it was.
