The long-awaited bilat between Prime Minister Mark Carney and Chinese President Xi Jinping — a meeting Carney said was “long overdue” — began with an invitation for the Canadian leader to visit Beijing.

“Our countries have a long history of cooperation, engagement and trade,” Carney said ahead of their meeting during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in South Korea, pointing out it was the first time the leaders of the two countries have met in eight years.

“I welcome the momentum that has been established in recent months, meetings of our officials, meetings of ministers, and the meeting I was able to have with (Chinese) Premier Li (Quang) in New York.”
