TYLER, Texas — The opening of deer season is this Saturday, a long-awaited day for hunters across Texas.

According to a 2022 study by Texas A&M’s Natural Resources Institute, deer hunting contributes more than $4 billion to the Texas economy each year. But as thousands prepare to head outdoors, safety remains the top priority.

Each year, hunters prepare for opening day to carry out a Texas tradition, but along with excitement, it’s important to remember safety first.

"I’ve been teaching hunter education for about the last 11, 12 years. I’m a police officer and have been for well now 40 years. I’ve been a firearms instructor since 1993, so I’ve got plenty of time working with the hunter ed," said Farrell Alexander, officer and hunter education and firearms instructor.
