KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Halloween spending is reaching new heights this year, with Americans expected to spend an average of $114 per person on costumes, decorations, candy and more.
The holiday, which has evolved into a $13 billion industry, sees significant expenditures as people prepare to celebrate.
According to a Consolidated Credit study, the average spending breaks down to $51 on costumes, $45 on decorations, $33 on candy, and $21 on greeting cards.
Halloween's origins trace back to the Celtic festival of Samhain in Ireland, where it was believed that ghosts would come out on the night before the Celtic New Year.
To ward off these spirits, people wore costumes and carved faces into turnips, a tradition that evolved into pumpkin carving in the U.S.
