GEORGETOWN COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - A Georgetown County school special needs aide admitted to assaulting a student; the student’s family filed suit against the district.

Charles Bernard Johnson pleaded guilty last week to third-degree assault and battery, the day before he was set to stand trial.

Georgetown police arrested Johnson in April 2024, after a video captured him punching a special needs Maryville Elementary school student in the chest as the child tried to run away from Johnson in the hallway.

Public records show Johnson only received a $500 fine for the assault.

The child’s parent is now suing both Johnson and the Georgetown County school district.
