TYLER, Texas — Feeding 3,000 animals is no small feat and that means staff at the Caldwell Zoo work hard to make sure every animal is well-fed.
Kimberly Ellison with the Caldwell Zoo explained some of the foods that the commissary crew puts together for the bird residents. Some of the foods include a mix of fish, meal worms, crickets and more.
"So we get the produce and stuff locally. We do not have the lake Smelt and the Silversides are not local, so we have them shipped in to us," Ellison said. "Everything as close to what they would get in the wild. Everything is made fresh daily for them, and they get fed twice a day. So we try to keep it as close to what they would get in the wild."
The zoo staff makes 3,000 meals twice a day for the 3,000 animals at the zoo, Ellison said.
