A Taylor man has been sentenced in the hit-and-run death of a woman’s dog, causing injuries to the animal’s owner.

Norman Newman, 38, was initially charged with abandoning/cruelty to an animal resulting in the animal’s death, reckless driving, and operating with a suspended, revoked, or denied license.

Newman pleaded guilty to one count of reckless driving and one count of operating without a valid license.

He was sentenced to 12 months of probation.

Kayla Marcoux told Taylor police that one minute she and her beloved bernedoodle, named Gilgamesh Howl Pendragon, affectionately known by the family as “Gilly,” were walking their routine route on the shoulder of Holland Road. "Out of nowhere,” a speeding car had a direct hit on Gilly, she said.

Marcoux was also knocked to the ground.
