ALBANY, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) -- The New York Department of Corrections and Community Supervision is recovering from a tumultuous year marked by inmate deaths and a correctional officer strike.

Commissioner Dan Marticello discussed with Newsmakers host Andrew Donovan the challenges faced by the agency, including the murders of inmates Robert Brooks and Mazaya Nantwi and the subsequent conviction of several officers involved.

"We are starting to recover," said Commissioner Marticello, referring to the agency's efforts to address the aftermath of the incidents and the strike.

The agency is dealing with significant staffing shortages, with nearly 5,000 correction officer vacancies and over 1,000 civilian vacancies. Efforts are underway to recruit new officers and fill these positions.
