The North Carolina State Board of Elections dismissed a complaint that sought to remove an Orange County elections official over a series of social media responses to posts about people who aren’t fluent in English.

David Kolbinsky, who sits on the Orange County Board of Elections, was the target of the complaint. State board members voted 4-1 during a meeting Friday to dismiss the complaint rather than advance it to a full hearing, saying the allegations didn’t meet the legal standard needed for further review and that the comments were protected speech. Kolbinsky called allegations made in the complaint "groundless," described them as misinformation, and apologized for "the chaos" caused by responding to social media comments.
