Shillong, Oct 31: Twenty-two people, including minors, were rescued after a violent mob of approximately 200 people gheraoed the residence of Ham Shangpliang in Khliehshnong, Sohra last night, threatening to destroy and set fire to the house.
The incident was triggered by allegations of witchcraft made by a minor boy who claimed to be under a spell cast by Shangpliang. Nine individuals identified as instigators of the crowd have been arrested so far, with more arrests expected.
Preliminary on-site inquiry indicated that the incident arose from claims made by the minor boy, who alleged that he had “visions” of Shangpliang and believed himself to be under a witchcraft spell (ai ksuid).
