Senator Tommy Tuberville , R-Ala., sparked shock and criticism on MSNBC's Morning Joe Show when he suggested that young men receiving SNAP benefits should return to work in comments made to reporters earlier this week.
SNAP , the federal program that provides food assistance to low-income Americans, serves millions of households nationwide. Tuberville's remarks come amid ongoing debates over welfare, unemployment and work requirements in the U.S.
"A lot of people need to go back to work," Tuberville said to reporters. "A lot of young men are on SNAP that should be working."
Tuberville also linked pressure to urban communities, saying, "It's their constituents, a lot of them, in some of these inner cities, that are going to need SNAP to survive, and they're getting a lot of calls.
