ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) - A local non-profit that serves many of our hometowns has launched an initiative that aims to help people in need during the government shutdown.

United Way of Virginia’s Blue Ridge has officially launched the Emergency Relief Fund.

The goal is to raise money for families who are having to make difficult decisions between food, rent and essential bills.

“No one should have to be stuck in that situation where they’re having to pick and choose what’s important, everything is equally important,” said United Way of Virginia’s Blue Ridge Vice President of Advancement, Kianna Price Marshall.

Marshall said they’re aiming to raise $40,000 dollars by December 2, with a goal of $10,000 a week.

They’re seeking community support to reach and hopefully exceed their goal.
