UPDATE: The Whitfield County Board of Commissioners is looking to increase millage rates, which could cost the average homeowner $260 more per year.

Residents got the chance to express their opinions to the county on Friday in the first of three public hearings.

The proposed plan would increase millage rates by 23.18%.

“From 2000 to 2025, it went from 500 to 2100. All of the increases have been in the last five years. It went 5, 8, 12… 21," says resident Roberta Sikkelee Curtin.

Redfin says the average home price in Whitfield County is $275,000. If this rate increase is approved, it could cost the average homeowner an extra $261 per year.

Whitfield County Commissioners announced on October 24 that they are seeking to increase the millage rates.
