HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) - In the midst of the government shutdown, the holidays are right around the corner.

Many families who have been missing paychecks are now also at risk of not getting their SNAP benefits on Saturday, Nov. 1.

To try and support these families, members of the West Virginia National Guard went to Facing Hunger Foodbank and assisted volunteers.

“We’re helping them package food and stuff to take up to the other counties they help,” said Breona Wright, a 92 Yankee in the Army.

Guardsmen learned they could be heading to food banks earlier in the week, but those orders weren’t approved until yesterday.

Facing Hunger Foodbank said before the government shutdown, they were serving about 112,000 West Virginians.
