ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) - SNAP assistance is set to go unfunded tomorrow, sparking off a national debate about the program and who benefits. Food banks say they are seeing some real challenges.

For the Jewish Family Services (JFS) of St. Louis, they’re already bracing for the impact of the shutdown and budget cuts in Missouri.

They operate the Harvey Kornblum Jewish Food Pantry – which allows visitors weekdays and only by appointment – that’s seen an increase in referrals from other food banks worried about meeting community needs.

“ Each month, up to 6,000 children, adults, and seniors receive seven-to-10 days of food,” JFS says of the food pantry services. “Eighty-five percent (85%) of all households served have incomes below the federal poverty level.”
